I liken air movement to like water . When water gets redirected like over a boulder . On the otherside of the boulder the water takes a downward motion . So if you have a violent storm action of chaotic winds boiling like rapids  you will have the winds make a violent downburst .

Downburst of air but no rotation . You really can see the effects of that on an open field like long grasses . Not blown in one direction over but almost like a big hand just flattens it .
