Hi Evelyn, I woke up to thick fog and a very dreary sky, we'll probably get more rain later. No, unfortunately Luke was treated very poorly by the garage and hasn't worked there for well over a year. The man who owned the garage sold it a few weeks after Luke graduated. He hadn't told anyone, not even the full-time employee! Told them one week, two weeks later he was gone. He told Luke he'd spoken with the new owners about him and that they were happy to keep him on and were prepared to look into offering him an apprenticeship. They strung him along for six months. Six months of free labour, they didn't pay him a single penny and he worked as hard there as the full-timer. Everytime he asked about the apprenticeship there was another excuse, all very plausible stuff.

I explained to Luke that I simply couldn't afford for to keep him without some sort of wage any longer (he'd graduated so David stopped maintenance and the Government had stopped Child Tax Credit and Child Benefit - almost £600 a month) no matter how much I wanted to, I couldn't. He went and spoke, again, with the new boss and said he needed a job and could he please know where he stood because if they couldn't offer him one he'd need to start looking elsewhere so he could apply for Universal Credit. That was it. By the end of the week they'd told him no. Apparently (????) they'd been told by their accountants not to take on any new employees for 6/12 months! He was really upset as you can imagine. I was furious!

Anyway, he had to apply for whatever jobs were available and ended up getting work in a local warehouse picking and packing, he absolutely hated it. He worked there from December 2024 until September 2025. Then their rent was increased and the company decided to move out of Rushden. They offered him a place in Northampton but he wasn't prepared to do the drive there and back every day for a job he didn't even want so he chucked it in. He'd been looking for a mechanics job on the side but everywhere wants experience and no-one was offering apprenticeships. His friend Nayo from the Netherlands was due to visit with us in October and then Luke was going there in November for a Comic Con, so he didn't look for a new job right away.

They were going off to Silverstone and had various other things arranged. He'd saved a fair bit of money from the warehouse job (for what he was doing and his age, it wasn't bad money!) so I agreed he didn't have to start looking again so long as he could pay his way. They both had a brilliant time, here and there and Luke started work at another warehouse a month ago. This time he's not just picking and packing, he's working as a stock controller too. It's not want he wants but he says it's okay and he much prefers it there (Monsoon and Accessorize) than he did at Whistl, said the whole atmosphere of the place is better. It's a job, fairly local, not bad money and he doesn't hate it, I'll take that as a win!
