It isn't quite that simple unfortunately.  For instance, the fructus randomus attracts tortoise which is all well and good but then it will interfere when you are trying to get the meerkat or skunk as they all eat veggies from low plates. It does require a lot of patience. I did struggle through all the trails with my Percy Pineapple though as he was rare and I was so pleased to get him.  It's much easier now of course as I can store him in the greenhouse but it's something for you to be aware of.  Sometimes it's just easier to harvest and regrow the ones that don't take too long. 
You may get lucky too if you have two pots that are similar in the order of wildlife which obviously makes things a lot easier.

When you look at the plants harvested in your garden, near the bottom it will tell you how many trails you have completed. So it's easy to keep a check on how many you've done.

If you plan to do an orange trail next you will need to have a rfh fructose randomus to attract the tortoise as he is one of the 6 wildlife needed.

I worked through all the reds, then  orange,  then  yellows etc. But I see lots of players mix the trails and are just as successful so really whatever you feel comfortable with. Bear in mind also that you will need rfh plants on the higher trails so you have to be prepared for them
