Hi Marnie, you get used to the hurricanes and any other storms you get in whatever State and part of the country you live in.  When I lived in NY, northeast we had blizzards/ice stores along with hurricanes and No'reasters which were just as bad.  You just prepare with food, generators and just sit it out.  If the Hurricanes are a CAT 4 OR 5, we pack a suitcases and head out to higher ground away from it.  My daughter did visit us twice down here but she and my SIL can't travel during holiday time.  MY SIL works for Amazon and Nov-Dec are blocked out for time off plus he's management, My daughter works in medical and she needs to save time for her personal time off.  We love to travel by car and it doesn't bother us...we traveled in ice storms in the past.  Hope you day is going well.  I hope I finish the tree for the Christmas unicorn.
