It may have been just before your time, there was a lot of gold to be had in Fairyland back then.  I do miss the good old days of how the game used to be - there was so many players back then too.

I didn't spot it unfortunately, I wish I did!  It was when EBs dropped gold (10 for first one spotted in a gaden and 5 gold for all others).  I would spend long hours hunting EBs when they were released, it was a great way to accumulate gold.
One year, Mike added the 100 gold bunny that was spotted on an even number bunny count, but couldn't always be guaged which number it was though (hence having the bunny count, it has no meaning now).  That year, he also had a random 1000 gold EB, not many, only 3 I think and it wasn't a number that could be easily guessed. 
The following year, EBs stopped giving gold and dropped eggs instead.
Pink flamingoes also used to drop gold but that also stopped years ago.
