Hi, Lori! 😘 The only digging we did was to level the frames. The rest (logs, branches, bark, etc.) was just in filling the frames. If you dig down below the water table you may have water coming up into the fill and perhaps making the fill get moldy, sour, whatever. Ours are at the top of our embankment and sitting on top of the ground. Anyway, give some thought to details before you make your decisions. Best of luck on your project! Hi, Lori! 😘 It was a lot of work. We had ten raised beds to fill. First it was getting the beds set up and leveled, then lining the inside bottom with cardboard to keep weeds from coming up, then adding hefty tree cuts and branches, then barm, then soil and finally compost on top of it all.  The bark and small branches will decay faster than the heavy wood, it's sort of a long term time release nutrient release plan, so this should last many years and we can keep adding compost each year as well. It has worked out very well except for one thing. The compost we bought was a little too light and fluffy to hold water near the surface so we had some problems getting plants and seeds started. The answer to that is peat pots with a little potting soil. We can start things earlier then just plant the whole pot and the potting soil will hold the moisture while the plant establishes itself.  Besides, the compost will compact over the winter rains. We also used buckets on stands to make a simple drip system. The only problem we have is bugs getting into the plastic buckets and clogging some of the drippers. I think we will cut holes in the bucket lids and cover that with screen door mesh, th
