Yes it's a good idea to try and spot the bottom dwellers in advance. There should be more people doing them at the moment because Halloween and also the Vases!
The only one I struggled to spot was Shrimp and I only spotted my 5th recently. I hope you have good luck finding what you need.
I'll be doing Shrimp and Starfish at some point, but going to take a little break for Halloween and enjoy the season as it's one of my favourites! xx

Yes, I believe you should still get normal bottom dwellers in the Halloween pond. I actually checked this earlier using the Wildlife Calculator and it showed I would still attract the spider crab, even with a merwitch in the garden. xx

  Attracting plants:  As for Zebra - Tulipa Praecocia in the black and/or white magic pots.  This is slightly different to the set up for Zebras, since you don't need both colours.

  Attracting plants:  As for Hippos - fully grown Dulcia Glaciaflora
  Deterrents: no deterrent
  Additional information: since the Hippos can come underwater, you may wish to deter them with a fully grown Dulcia Saccraflora
