well he should know what his doing if his been painting that long, my brother and sister inlaw had their place repainted painted just over a year ago after 20 years and there's got washed down before hand, mainly cause of dust, cooking mists etc on the walls, sanding them creates dust then they paint over it, Yes sand them a little them give them a damp mop down with a squeeze mop. cause they painting on top of dust from sanding.
See how it looks when they finish and if your not happy then say something to them.. xxx😘

hi Kathy, when you say imperfections, do you mean like marks in the walls, like little dents? they should have put a bit of putty into them and smooth them over, before painting, that all should be included in thier quotes. we even did that when we painted some of the room in my old place before we painted it, and all the walls should have been washed down to avoid the paint peeling off in the next couple of years.
I did get tired and laid down for like 45 minutes then got up and got dinner for chris and i xx 
Hopefully the 2nd coat will make it not so white, not sure of the colour you chose.  Good luck with it all. xx 🤗😘
