Standing by the Cenotaph today, a myriad of colours touch the stone; Tear drops of light fall down blood red for all those who fell at Ypres, Passchendaele & Somme. All wars to end all wars the politicians said. No more would we see the carnage and the hell these young men saw; For now it is the end of war it was decreed. Then came the horror once again a Second War to end all wars to cut our young men down. Horrors that cannot be said but felt by aged men. Though less and less we see heads bowed in silent reverie. For most are dead; Their haunting thoughts of nightmare days to heaven they now take. Their tarnished medals discarded like fallen poppy petals.
the politicians said go on your way, & fight for right today.
Then bloodied and bowed they watched their comrades fall; They came home in a pine box flagged with Jack, bereft of life or limb. So, when at home you stay bemoaning the economy, think on For each lad would proudly say they fought for our right to freedom.
So when you hear the Ben strike 11.00 stand silently for two minutes of your day. For they gave of their tomorrow, so we could have today!
