Sarah Josepha Hale (1788-1879) was writer & editor of the woman's magazine Godey's Lady Book. Hale worked tirelessly for a national day of thanksgiving here in the US. President Lincoln finally proclaimed the first in 1863 thinking it would bring some unity and cheer during our Civil War. Congress did not declare Thanksgiving as a National Holiday until 1941.
