When one's dad is an auror and your parents former Death Eaters, honesty wasn't always the best path to follow.
He was exhausted to use his wand and the "lumos" curse for hours in these caves. He was sure he had discovered the land of the kobolds, but at which price? It was utterly empty. Just corridors of rocks and stones.
