Had the bamboo in the garden where you spotted it gone RTH by any chance?  It still comes, if it's already been programmed in before it became RTH, but you don't get the bamboo food.

I suspect the second one, the one planted a day ago, may have been left to grow naturally, and hadn't become fully grown when you watered.  They take 24 hours to become ready, it looks as if there was a gap between the one going RTH and the other becoming fully grown.
