For several days, nothing happened and frustration and anxiety over Hermione's condition continued to fuel the little group of sorcerers, witches and house-elves in the desperate attempt to find a solution to save her.
The explosion at the Ministry of Magic and Hermione's condition, locked in a tank full of death stopper solution couldn't be concealed and every day, a new theory was produced in the press. Great Britain was now receiving the best specialists from America, Asia, Africa, Europe and new elections were all the rage since Hermione was incapacitated.
The condition of house elves were sources of heated debates and many families have been giving a piece of clothing to their house elf, out of fear and suspicion. Some enjoyed their new freedom, many others had lost their sense of purpose, their family and had to be helped with  new found tasks.

"You aren't that old to think of the Thereafter, Kreacher! You have many happy years ahead of you. I understand that you'd want to retire; are there places for retired house elves? Or you could stay with us, just work less hours, paid hours and..." Albus Severus was trying to get his sweater back from Kreacher, regretting bitterly to have offered the old house elf his freedom.

But Kreacher, who was still drenched with soapy water was not ready to let go of his brand new sweater. "I don't plan to go to a Thereafter, I plan to live with my family, in the Lost Realm. Who said it was a place for the deads? It's a place for the living!" said Kreacher.

"Finite incantatem!" said Albus Severus and all of a sudden, brushes, mops and sponges fell down to the basement stones, leaving a half drowned Kreacher spit bubbles of soap. His cloth had never been so sparkling white and his mood so dark. "This... This is an outrage, master Potter! I... I protest!"

Albus, who looked genuinely sorry, apologized to Kreacher and to prevent him catching a cold, without thinking, he took off his sweater (knitted by Mrs Weasley) and gifted it to his own house elf.
Hands shaking with emotion, Kreacher touched the sweater and cried: "I am free."
