Hi, I (at long last!) completed Level 1 of Quests - how do I add paint to the totem pole I have bought? Thank you

Click on the totem pole and it will give you the option to paint.

Unfortunately this isn't working - is it something I was meant to do as soon as the notice about completing Level 1 came up?

You have the wrong pole out. For level 1 it unlocks the animal pole and you have the bird one in your garden :)

Yes so you can paint the first section of the mammal one now - then once you complete the next set you will be able to paint the first section of the bird one :) they kind of take turns at being painted X
