When are we supposed to try to spot the Halloween critters to make our pumpkins grow?

You have the first hour that it's fully grown.  Your best bet is to plant and dust the pumpkin to fully grown when you are ready to hunt.

I noticed this post and I had that same question so thank you for answering it for me as well. Could somebody please tell me how the inches are figured? It does not explain it on the News page and it's been a couple of years since I've done it so I don't remember. Thank you for any help.

It depends on the wildlife you spot - each Hallowe'en animal which counts for the pumpkin growing adds the same number of pounds as the diamonds it gives.  So 4lb for a pygmy mouse, 10lb for a crow, 2lb for a field mouse, etc.

I seem to remember it's all explained a bit better on the Help link which shows up when your pumpkin is fully grown.

It really doesn't break it down any more than you did. I'm not sure about cats and bats and the new underwater critters either. I really wish it explained things better. Thanks for your input Tracey. I'm in the middle of the challenge now and having trouble finding gardens to hunt, but I'll still get a nice Halloween pot for my efforts.

Cats and bats, all of the ghostly and zombie mice and ducks, the crow, and all of the ghostly underwater wildlife (other than the merwitch).

I know it used to be listed somewhere, which is why I thought it was under the Help link, but I can't remember where it was.   It may have been listed on the News page in previous years, when it was just the stuff attracted to the Hallowe'en flower.
