Lily had listened very carefully to Snape's long explanation, interrupting him only to ask a few questions. "So, Lucius gifted it to you because it was broken and he couldn't fix it? But it looks intact to me!" The artefact in Snape's palm was of the size of a pocket watch, with four different arrows pointing to 4 different displays of strange writings. One was turning like a small helicopter while he was holding it.
"We could get some answers if we could decipher those characters and numbers" said Lily. "I have nothing else to do, I suggest we find books about this lost realm Dumbledore told you about."
"There are none, someone seems to have borrowed them all" replied Severus.
"Find who and we'll find answers"

Lying on the cold stone tiles in the restricted section of Hogwarts library, Snape had used a technique seen on the muggle tv they had at home. With a pencil and a thin sheet of paper, he had tried to recover the text engraved there.
The Moon was hidden under heavy rain clouds and to his frustration, no words were revealed. He should have known, words engraved by magic couldn't be read by such ordinary means.

"What are you doing?" asked Lily, making him jump. Ande Severus decided to trust her. He reached into his pocket and showed her the artefact Lucius gave him. "I'm looking for answers about this and why the Ministry is so interested."

Lily Evans had marched James Potter back to the Griffindor common room and Snape has had no other option but to follow or fall out with her too. The Moon was now hidden behind clouds and he could hear the rain fall, there was no way he could decipher the message on the Library's tile now... unless...
The following night, Snape had broken the Library's lock again. The weather had turned from rain to snow and there was no hope of getting a Moon ray on the old tiles again, but he had resorted to a muggle trick he had seen once at his parents' place.
